Background

Iโ€™m an Associate Professor, first appointed to ะึรรยายื in 1990. I hold an Hon. BA from the University of Guelph and an MFA from York University, where I concentrated on drawing and printmaking. Iโ€™m an interdisciplinary designer with interests in web, user interface design, physical computing and product design. From 2000 to 2016 I served the Division of Design as Chair for 15 years and Director of the Master of Design program for two years. Over the years Iโ€™ve held Creative Director or positions at several Halifax-based start-ups, including ITC Learning, PhotoPoint, Knowledge House, and Origin BioMed. In addition to my teaching activities in Canada, Iโ€™ve taught design in Ghana and I hold an official position as Visiting Professor at Foshan University, China.

CURRENT RESEARCH AND/OR CREATIVE PRACTICE

My main focus is on UI/UX, working in web-based and 3D design. Iโ€™m currently developing apps and products engaged with data from the Internet. With Prof. Yasushi Akiyama of Saint Maryโ€™s University, I was awarded a $100k Mitacs Accelerate grant to investigate solutions to the problem of medication adherence in elderly patients. The grant, titled โ€œMedication Adherence Using HomeEXCEPTโ€™s Non-Intrusive Monitoring Platformโ€ will fund 8 ะึรรยายื MDES and SMU Master of Computer Science interns. Itโ€™s scheduled to begin May 2021.
